Sumant Sinha is the Founder CEO of ReNew Power, India’s largest clean energy company. In 2011, the company received the largest equity funding in India’s clean energy space from Goldman Sachs. In another round of funding in 2014, the Asian Development Bank and the Global Environment Fund joined ReNew Power as investors. Abu Dhabi Investment Authority(ADIA) joined the list of investors in 2015 with an investment of $200 million. Under his leadership, ReNew Power has raised more than a billion dollars in debt and equity financing, with close to 1000MW in construction and operational wind & solar projects across the country.
Prior to founding ReNew Power, Sumant held top management positions at some of India’s largest conglomerates. He was the CFO at the Aditya Birla Group and the Founder CEO of Aditya Birla Retail and more recently the Chief Operating Officer of Suzlon Energy Ltd. Prior to this, he was an international investment banker, having worked in NY and London and raised funds for both Governments and large companies.
Sumant is a passionate advocate for solutions to climate change through the intersection of business and public policy. He speaks extensively on global platforms and has authored more than a hundred articles on subjects related to India’s economic scenario, entrepreneurship and issues related to climate change in leading publications such as The Economic Times, Business Standard, The Financial Times and The Wall Street Journal.
He serves as the Chairman of the National Renewable Energy Committee of the Confederation of Indian Industry and is on the Advisory Board at Columbia University in School of International & Public Affairs. He also serves as the joint Chairman of the Indian Wind Energy Alliance(IWEA). He holds a B. Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, an MBA from IIM Calcutta and a Master’s degree from Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs, where he was the Dean’s fellow.
