Ms. Shivani Bhasin Sachdeva is the Founder, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer at India Alternatives Private Equity (“India Alt”). India Alt is a leading venture capital private equity fund with a corpus of INR 230 cr. with 100% of its commitments from leading domestic institutions, public sector banks and insurance companies. India Alt specializes in both early stage and growth capital investments in India. Leveraging certain underlying themes such as women’s empowerment, India’s consumption story and developing healthcare, the primary focus remains to generate superior IRRs. The Fund has made several marquee investments till date, including in Gokaldas Intimatewear, India’s fastest growing market leader in the women’s lingerie space which owns the brand “Enamor”, and CIBIL, India’s dominant credit information bureau and Ideacount, an early stage and upcoming vocational services company. India Alternatives has attracted top talent in the industry and includes industry veterans such as Mrs. Ranjana Kumar (Ex CVCI; Ex Chairperson Indian Bank and NABARD); Kiran Nadkarni (a pioneer in the private equity space with over 25 years of experience, having started ICICI Ventures); Dr. Ajai Kumar (Founder, HCG Multi specialty Hospital with over 30 years of experience in Radiation & Oncology) and Ms. Veronica John (Ex ADB and CDC; listed as one of Asia’s most influential women in Finance).
Shivani steered India Alternatives into a strategic partnership with IIFL Wealth Management Limited (“IIFLW”) one of India’s largest and most reputed wealth management firms. IIFLW has relationships with over 8,600 marquee families and advises on assets of approximately USD 12 billion, making it one of the top three private wealth management companies in India.
Prior to founding India Alternatives, Shivani was a key member of the senior management at IDFC Private Equity where she was responsible for deal sourcing, execution and monitoring in fast growing companies in India. Shivani has made investments and managed portfolio companies in various sectors including domestic consumption, healthcare (first PE investor in HealthCare Global), hospitality (managed the Chalet Hotels of the Raheja’s), telecom (invested in Hutchison Essar and Vodafone Essar) and water solutions (invested in Doshion Water Solutions). Her investments have yielded IRRs for investors of between 23% - 171%.
Before IDFC Private Equity, Shivani spent 14 years in the US where she completed her education at two Ivy League institutions and worked at top notch global venture capital and private equity funds. Immediately prior to IDFC Private Equity, Shivani worked with Lightyear Capital, a private equity fund based in New York, where she was responsible for evaluating both growth equity and venture investment opportunities in sectors including education and financial services. Before Lightyear Capital, Shivani worked at the private equity arm of General Electric and the Investment Banking division at Credit Suisse First Boston, New York.
Shivani has been an active member on the boards of all her portfolio companies where she has been instrumental in guiding management teams and shaping strategy. Shivani has been on the Board of HealthCare Global (South Asia’s largest cancer care provider), and currently sits on the Boards of Gokaldas Intimatewear (India’s leading women’s innerwear company that owns the brand “Enamor”) and Ideacount Education (early stage vocational services company).
Shivani is a frequent speaker at domestic and international conferences on private equity including the Indian Venture Capital Association, AVCJ, and SuperReturn in Europe. Shivani was recently invited to moderate a panel on ‘Private Equity in India’ at the SuperReturn Emerging Markets Conference in Amsterdam in June 2015.
